When do I need to re-feed?

The nutrients in SYBASoil will run out in ~6 months on average.

We will advice you on the right fertiliser after doing our plant scan.

When do I repot?

We recommend repotting once any of these things happen:

  • You see roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • The soil dries very quickly between watering
  • The plant is top-heavy and wants to fall over
  • Roots are pushing the plant up and out of the container
  • Every 1 to 2 years

What can I expect when using your products?

94.2% of customers report visibly stronger roots& leaf growth within a few weeks.

You will also notice that watering becomes a lot easier due to having the right soil structure.

Why is the soil peat-free?

We don't think peat is so neat!

It becomes too compact over time, leading to a state where it no longer absorbs water.

That's why we opt for coconut fiber and worm castings, keeping your potting soil delightfully airy and usable for much longer. Much more environmentally friendly in its use & less CO2!

The Perfect Lavender Soil for Healthy Growth & Happy Plants

How Do I Use These Products for My Lavender?

Lavender is a tough yet elegant Mediterranean herb that thrives when given the right start — especially when it comes to soil. While it’s famous for being drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, lavender is also quick to suffer in the wrong conditions, especially if the soil is too heavy or retains too much moisture. That’s where our Universal Mix comes in.

To plant or repot your lavender, begin with a pot or planter that offers excellent drainage. Fill the bottom third with Universal Mix, then gently place your lavender plant, ensuring the base of the stem is just above soil level. Fill in around the root ball and press down lightly — but don’t compact the mix too much. Water thoroughly once after planting, and let excess water drain freely.

Lavender prefers slightly dry conditions after it has settled in, so you won’t need to water it as frequently as many other plants. Our Universal Mix helps maintain just the right balance — holding onto moisture when needed, but always draining quickly to avoid soggy roots.

This mix works equally well for potted lavender on balconies, windowsills, or terraces, and can also be mixed into poor garden soil to improve structure and drainage for in-ground planting.

How Does Universal Mix Work for Lavender?

Lavender is extremely sensitive to soil texture and drainage. In soggy or compacted soil, its roots can rot quickly, leading to yellowing leaves, stunted growth, or even sudden plant death. Universal Mix offers a loose, mineral-rich, and low-peat alternative that fits lavender’s preferences perfectly.

Here’s how the ingredients support lavender specifically:

Worm castings – A gentle source of organic nutrition. While lavender doesn’t need a nutrient-heavy soil, a small, steady supply of trace minerals and nitrogen helps it establish and encourages blooming without overstimulating leaf growth.

Coco coir – Adds a soft, water-retentive structure that keeps the root zone moist without becoming soggy. It helps maintain stability in pots, especially in windy or sun-exposed locations.

Perlite – Ensures good aeration and drainage. Perlite creates air pockets throughout the mix, which helps prevent compaction and root suffocation — something lavender is especially prone to.

Lava gravel – Provides mineral content and a gritty texture that lavender loves. It mimics the stony terrain of its native habitat, supporting robust root development and preventing soil from collapsing in on itself over time.

Activated carbon – Purifies the root zone by absorbing impurities and supporting microbial balance. This keeps the root environment clean and low-stress, which benefits a plant like lavender that prefers stability.

Organic nutrients – Offer slow-release support that doesn’t overwhelm. Lavender prefers to be underfed rather than overfed, so this light nutritional background helps it grow steadily without encouraging weak, floppy growth.

Together, these elements combine into a light, structured mix that supports lavender’s root system and flowering cycles without creating the kind of wet, dense environment it dislikes.

The Original Habitat of Lavender

Lavender originates from the rocky, sun-drenched hillsides of the Mediterranean, where it grows wild among gravel, sand, and stony clay soils. These regions are hot, dry, and windy — with minimal rainfall, plenty of sun, and well-draining soil that barely holds moisture.

The native soil of wild lavender is often poor in nutrients and very loose in structure, allowing even the heaviest summer rains to pass through quickly. This is what makes lavender drought-tolerant — its roots evolved to thrive in dry, mineral-heavy environments.

When growing lavender in pots or gardens outside of its native climate, the key to success is recreating that same environment. Universal Mix helps replicate the qualities of Mediterranean soil by offering a dry-friendly structure, light nutrition, and mineral support — all while keeping your plant grounded and stable.

How to Care for Lavender

Lavender is low-maintenance once it’s settled into the right soil. Here’s how to help it thrive all year long:

Light: Lavender is a full-sun plant — it needs at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Indoors, place it near the brightest window you have. Outdoors, give it an open, unshaded spot where it can soak up the sun.

Watering: Allow the top few centimeters of soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of lavender failure. In cooler or shaded conditions, reduce watering even further.

Feeding: Lavender doesn’t need much fertilizer. In fact, too much can lead to floppy growth and fewer flowers. If needed, a light organic feed once at the start of the growing season is enough — and Universal Mix already includes a baseline level of nutrients.

Pruning: After flowering, trim back spent blooms and lightly shape the plant to keep it compact and bushy. Avoid cutting into the woody part of the stems, as this can slow regrowth.

Winter care: In colder climates, protect potted lavender from frost by bringing it indoors or placing it in a sheltered spot. For in-ground plants, mulching with gravel can help prevent root freeze and improve drainage.

Container tips: If growing in a pot, choose unglazed terracotta for maximum breathability. Make sure water can always escape freely from the bottom.

By starting with a structured, free-draining mix like Universal Mix, you give lavender the foundation it needs to grow strong, flower richly, and resist stress. It’s an easy win for a plant that rewards you with beauty, scent, and resilience — all in one.
